<h3>Connections Made and Resources Gained at City National Bank&#8217;s Insight One20</h3>
<p><a href="http://insightone20.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Insight One20</a>, a brand new business conference, was held on March 16, 2013 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The event, created and hosted by City National Bank, targeted leaders of $1 million to $20 million dollar businesses, but provided invaluable information and resources for business owners at any stage.</p>
<p>Insight One20 touted the tagline &#8220;This day could transform your business,&#8221; and provided a full day of content, an expo hall, author signings, and a networking session to close out the day.</p>

<p>At the start of the main event, City National CEO Russell Goldsmith pointed out that in California it is estimate that there are over 700,000 small business employers &#8211; more than any other state in the nation. He went on to point out that many entrepreneurs and small business owners that come into his banking centers have the same concerns &#8211; &#8220;how do I increase sales and revenue? How do I secure access to credit? Manage my cash flow and accounts receivable?&#8221; &#8211; and reminded attendees that the purpose of the event was to equip business owners with the tools they need to grow successful businesses.</p>

We can forget that we’re having success because this good idea is solving someone’s problem. Hopefully a lot of someones. We knew that in the beginning either through our guts, anectodically, or through consumer research. Likely all 3. The good idea was our first right move. But this idea needs to keep pace with our customers. Does it still solve our customer’s problem?</p>
<p>When we started up HGTV, we had a good idea. We were in the media sector, which is in such constant, frantic change that we knew we had to keep refining our idea. We needed to talk to our customers constantly. But we had a problem. We worked through middlemen, called cable operators and satellite companies. They were the ones with the direct link to our viewers. We had to do a work-around.</p>
<p>We were the first and only cable network to create a Call Center. (This was 1995 so the Internet wasn’t commonly used for customer interaction at that time) We put a number on the backplates of all our shows, and set up two people to take the calls. These folks were also doing plenty of other things when they weren’t talking to our viewers, so we kept it cost efficient. The Call Center allowed us to hear feedback about the business we were creating. It also allowed our customers to have a link to us, and to feel like they were helping us. And they were! That interaction still takes place today although it’s mostly done online. It may have been the most important building block of HGTV.</p>
